Harakeke - Flax

What an awesome day to be at school in Room 13. I just had to share the excitement that was buzzing  from the students. The class was organised into a rotation in small groups based on harakeke - our flax bush outside of the classroom.  With help and guidance from Whaea Arna the children learnt or for some recapped on how to care for a flax bush, the importance of cutting the outside leaves (tipuna) while keeping the matua(parent leaves) protecting the pepe/rito (baby leaf).

Other groups were working on being kaitiaki and discovering the flax around our school, making observations about the current state they are in.  We will be creating an action plan on how we can make a difference and really nurture these around our environment.
Others were involved in learning new Kupu/words linked with family/whanau.  Managing our learning, working effectively within a time frame and following our agreed class treaty made for a special inquiry day.

    1. It was quite a process preparing the flax for weaving. Over the last two days we have learnt so much more about flax and how to look after it. Thanks for the comment Trevor.
