Today we had the opportunity to work with the Harakeke in preparation for weaving. We learnt how to strip the edges and spine with our fingernails, keep the flax hydrated and size our pieces by using a template. Whaea Arna also showed us how to use the shell to soften the flax.
We also had the opportunity to create some contemporary art from a piece of flax. Your first item is to be a koha/gift to someone. The class came up with an array of amazing items, for an array of people. They learnt ways to manipulate the flax, tie, twist, strip, fold etc etc. One of the most important aspects we learnt was the respect for flax. Because we are working with the tipuna/ancestors that you don't walk on or over flax. All the remaining scraps not required are bundled, tied up and placed back under the flax bush. This will breakdown over time and replenish the plant.
