This represents the hard work and team work to create something strong and durable. It brings part of the outside rooms of our class to the inside. It holds true to what we agreed on at the start of the year in what our 'Te Tiriti o Ruma Tekau ma Toru' should be. A key phrase that runs strong in all that we do is to 'do the right thing at the right time for the right reason and more importantly(when no-one is looking)which shows integrity.
All members of the room have have had the opportunity to work with the harakeke, as one observant student mentioned the warmth of the flax as you worked with it. Olivia was also able to pop in near the end of the day and wove her strand in.
The final part to be included is a piece that represents us; we talked about something from nature that can be incorporated in to the weaving - a feather, a shell, a gemstone etc.
This has been an incredible journey with the class so far, they have gained so much knowledge, been able to expand their learning and have started to become more curious about their environment. I feel the learning culture changing with questioning minds - exciting times.
It was a long tiring day due to the gala the previous night. They all seemed in different states of tiredness throughout the day( teacher included). It seemed to take a huge effort to get our Mihi published for the wall.
Our special visitor from Whangarei also arrived this morning. Kerri is involved with Mike's Woodshop which is a company we are looking at for furniture in our space. She had them looking through brochures, tape measures out, trialling a couple of seats etc. She loved working with the children - in fact the morning tea bell went and only I noticed, everyone was still at work. The furniture within the room has been a trial, borrowed etc to get us underway. There are aspects we love and aspects we don't. The challenge for the groups was to look at the problem areas in the room and come up with a possible solution. We will need a budget(spending plan) from Mr B then we can contact Kerri to give us a quote. Ordering can take 6-8 weeks. The room was a buzz with ideas. Kerri mentioned that she had only once been involved with the class - often furniture is purchased without the largest stakeholders being involved in the choice. Watch this space!
Bible in Schools started today, we have Daniel as our teacher this year, he previously was working with Room 4. A reminder for any children who are not participating this year require a new note to have them excused from the programme.
We finished the day with the school assembly - Congratulations to the stars of Room 13 this week
